Abstract
This study explores the grid paintings of Agnes Martin that are typically identified as Minimalist. Through exploration of Martin's process, inspirations, and response of viewers it is evident that there is an uncharacteristic aspect of spirituality in her work that is not prevalent in the typical Minimalist body of work. While Martin's work does align with a portion of Minimalist characteristics, as will be illustrated in this study, Minimalist isn't a sufficient label to place on her and her work. Agnes Martin produces more than a Minimalist art object. Through a spiritual experience in her process she provides a spiritual experience for her viewers.
