Abstract:
A History of Roman Art, Second Edition, provides a wide-ranging survey of the subject from the founding of Rome to the rule of Rome's first Christian emperor, Constantine, including key information on the Etruscan and early Roman period, a topic often missed in similar works. Incorporating the most up-to-date information available on the topic, this new textbook explores the creation, use, and meaning of art in the Roman world. This textbook emphasizes cultural context and ancient literary sources, and compares with current scholarly topics to stimulate classroom discussion. Each chapter consists of chronological narrative on the art, and focuses on key examples to illustrate its cultural world. Sidebars throughout the book illustrate artistic techniques including stone carving, bronze casting, glass blowing, mosaic creation, and wall painting; all with example works. This revised edition adds new and updated material including additional discussion of the Architectural Revolution, coverage of art from the post-Constantine era and Roman Jews, new extracts from primary works, additional maps, more in-depth analysis of iconograph, and additional references and further reading suggestions.
