A stele of 689 states that the excavation of cave-chapels on the Ming-sha mountains began in 366. Comprising some four hundred and eighty caves, Tun-Huang contains within its thousands of mud and stucco sculptures and its miles of wall paintings a chronicle of China's artistic development from.
