Abstract:
This monograph is a study of the six free-standing wooden polychromatic Buddhist statues housed in the Bishop White Gallery at the Royal Ontario Museum.

These icons are said to have come from Shanxi province. Yet, there is no concrete evidence to attest to where these statues are from, what deities they represent, most importantly, when they were executed. And there has never been an intensive academic research conducted to identify them.

Therefore, an attempt has been made in this paper to determine their provenance, dates of origins and identities.

To do so, the stylistic evolution of both Indian and Chinese Buddhist sculpture will be investigated in length, in particular, the latter.

Further, some important Chinese painters, their styles and great influence on Chinese sculpture throughout history will also be examined.

Finally, by using typology and eliminating methods, a tentative dating and identifying for these statues in question will be provided.
