Abstract:
Today, China has emerged as one of the largest art markets regarding the auction sales, which is mainly contributed by the traditional Chinese fine and decorative art. The Western blue-chip galleries find locations in Hong Kong, anticipating the once-hot Chinese art market for contemporary art to reignite. A new generation of Chinese collectors, whose age is between 21 to 40, keeps coming in to view. They were born in the wake of economic reform in 1977, under the influence of the one-child policy. This group of young Chinese collectors was born roughly around and after 1980 (the Post-80s). They are soon becoming the main pillar of the economy. There needs to be an in-depth study of their attitudes towards collecting, as well as their tastes. The central question of this thesis concerns the factors that influence the preferences towards art. This research, therefore, helps to understand and predict how the art market in China might trend in the future. Most importantly, it provides an insight into how the society or key players within the art market can shape collecting tastes from an increasingly prominent group of buyers.
