Abstract:
"The Asian Art Museum is pleased to present this catalogue of the Grabhorn Collection of Japanese prints. Edwin Grabhorn was co-publisher with his brother, Robert, of the Grabhorn Press, the preeminent printer of fine books in the San Francisco Bay area during the early- and mid-twentieth century. His interest in Japanese prints dated to the 1920s, and, as a passionate collector, he had assembled one of the most significant private collections outside of Japan by the time of his death in 1968. Although Grabhorn published selected prints in a series of four limited-edition books printed by Grabhorn Press, for many years the prints were largely kept from view by the public or even most scholars in the United States. The 1979 publication of many of the prints in the tenth volume of Ukiyo-e shūka, a deluxe Japanese-language series cataloguing major print collections around the world, helped to reawaken interest in the collection, and in 1995 and 1996 a selection of the finest works was finally exhibited in Japan"--From publisher.
