Die Buddhapredigt von Ding Guanpeng aus dem Jahr 1770 gehört zu den größten je von einem Hofmaler in der Qing Dynastie geschaffenen Gemälden. Das Werk, das sich heute in der Sammlung des Ethnologischen Museums in Berlin befindet, wurde selbst von der chinesischen Kunstwissenschaft bis heute kaum beachtet. Autor Ching-Ling Wang, Kurator für chinesische Kunst am Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum, versucht in seinem Buch den Stellenwert des Gemäldes neu zu bewerten. Anhand neuester Forschungsergebnisse ergründet Wang den künstlerischen und kunsthistorischen Wert der Arbeit. Er stellt Fragen nach Funktion und Bedeutung und bettet das Werk in einen kulturhistorischen Kontext ein.
