摘要:
For some artists, spirituality and religion are the central underlying force in their work; the energy that drives them to explore their identities as artists and as sentient beings, and the motivation to cultivate a transformation in the mind of the viewer, compelling them to think about art in a new way. In modern and contemporary art, these inspirations are sometimes overlooked, or their importance softened. It is however, imperative to examine the spiritual and religious influences of artists to gain a deeper understanding of their work. My research thesis expands upon the spiritual and religious themes found in the art of Nam Jun Paik, Joseph Beuys, Yoko Ono, and Ben Vautier. In my thesis, I investigate the spiritual nature of the performance art and other works of these artists, which were created as part of the influx of art produced by the Fluxus movement. I also analyze the potential spiritual and religious symbolism of materials that were incorporated into the works, and the process that was involved.
